The Story of Amizetta

Since its genesis, the dream of Amizetta Vineyards has been to create, administer and reside upon our family estate vineyards. We envisioned growing the absolute highest quality wine grapes, in one of the most renowned wine producing regions in the world: Napa Valley, California.

Amizetta vineyards was established in 1979 when Amizetta and Spencer Clark moved from Texas to a magnificent property just outside the small town of Saint Helena in Northern California's Napa Valley. The winery & vineyards were developed at a 1,000 ft. elevation in the eastern hills overlooking Lake Hennessey on the southern tip of the Howell mountain range.

The vineyards were planted in the early 1980s on an extremely steep, stony & porous terrain making for arduous grape growing with limited grape yields. Combined with intensive hillside water stress conditions and vast southern exposure, these vineyards have historically brought forth spectacular grapes.

For many years a small percentage of our total harvest was sold to a select few of Napa Valley's most famous wineries. Beginning with the 2002 harvest, all Amizetta Vineyards estate grapes were exclusively used in the making of Amizetta estate wines, with our most select grapes from the "little vineyard of the wild turkeys" going into our signature label.

Our Amizetta estate wines began in 1984. Today they are a culmination of years of experimentation to produce the noblest grapes from specifically selected areas in our vineyards. This is combined with our on-going wine analysis program, determining varying degrees and combinations of French oak barrel aging.

The result yields wines of complexity and total structural balance, permitting superior cellar aging capability. We now produce about 2,000 cases annually of our limited release Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon and Complexity. Exquisite wines of elegance and finesse.

The mastery of the wine making is guided by the legendary and skillful hands of devoted winemaker, Bob Egelhoff. His achievements with our grapes are undoubtedly some of the finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage wines in the world today. His remarkable abilities and continued efforts are unrelenting in his goal to maintain and pursue an endless degree of perfection in our wines. A true master vintner possessing inspirational philosophies of winemaking.

Amizetta Vineyards takes great pride in its ability to combine an ideal vineyard location with the perfect grape varieties to create wines in grand unique styles. Although Amizetta wines are primarily sold through our mail order, they are also distributed in many areas of the United States, and may be found in some of the finest restaurants and wine shops.

Graced upon this breathtaking mountain setting, we continue our quarter century history of growing extraordinary grapes while realizing our dream of making rare and stellar wines, a progressive, enduring reality that reflects Amizetta Vineyards' single resolute philosophy: Create world class wines.

'Vigneto del Tacchino Selvatico'

Wine & Spirits gave our 'Vigneto del Tacchino Selvatico' 2001 a

and named it one of the year's 10 Top Cabs.

"Go beyond the explosion of flavor and you'll find a balanced bright wine. It smells like Napa in waves of juicy black currants and darker, umami earthiness. Then the flavors are complete, harmonious, giving sweet fruit into the service of velvet tannins. The finely meshed soil and fruit expression lasts for over a minute after each taste, the complexities shifting and changing over the course of an evenings meal. Share it as you would a chateaubriand for two, it will live up to an elegant dinner now and will with five or ten years of age."

Wine & Spirits gave our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 a
90.

"Lush and sunny as a Napa Valley cabernet can be, this still brings Old World styles to mind. There's the sweet oak scent reminiscent of Rioja, a Graves-like fruitiness to the tannin, the cherries-in-chocolate richness of a Port. Rich and well stocked with flavor, the wine manages to give all that with some elegance as well. Serve with roasted lamb chops."

"Really a lovely Cab, this gentle wine captivates for its soft, lush mouthfeel & sheer complexity. It's rich in black currant & cherry fruit, & generously oaked, but possesses an inherent balance & structural integrity that make it impeccable. - S.H."

This little winery, which grows it's grapes high in the mountains outside of St. Helena, is getting better with each passing vintage. Their Cabs are showing ripeness isnŐt enough, but balance and style count, especially at this price. The Ő03 is still a young wine, but is dramatically fruity, well oaked and has the drama of a fine Napa Cab with the ability to last through 2009 before a bit of the fruit forwardness may start to fade. - S.H.

Robert Egelhoff Winemaker

amizetta winemaker bob egelhoff

Robert Egelhoff is the winemaker and vineyard consultant for Amizetta Vineyards. A seasoned professional, he brings over 20 years of experience in the California Wine industry to Amizetta winery. Bob has held previous positions with such successful and outstanding companies as Merryvale, Chappellet, and Pahlmeyer vineyards. In addition, he has substantial background in premium custom winemaking and has coordinated production for over a dozen nationally recognized brands.

An essential philosophy behind Egelhoff's winemaking is his hands-on approach in directing vineyard and winemaking practices, and closely monitoring the results. For Amizetta wines, which are all estate grown and produced, this concept is the foundation for Egelhoff's exacting demands on quality.

He believes that a conscientious winemaker must devote time and energy to overseeing all viticulture practices in order to ensure that the maximum in quality is achieved. "There is no magic to the fact that only superior grapes can be made into great wines," he states. This simple, direct approach of "great grapes, great wines" is an important, underlying principle of Amizetta Vineyard's winemaking. As Bob emphatically declares, "winemaking begins in the vineyard." As such, Egelhoff considers himself a "winegrower" and spends much time in Amizetta's vineyards.

Egelhoff's winemaking is aimed towards producing full-bodied, elegant wine. Hisinvolvement in all aspects of viticulture practices and enological techniques enables him to produce the wines that accurately reflect their grapes' sources.

A serious winemaker and man of great wit, Bob possesses excellent knowledge of the industry, high professionalism, straightforwardness and a refreshing, "roll-up-the-sleeves & get to work attitude."

Bob Egelhoff is a graduate of the University of California at Davis where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. He lives in St. Helena with his wife and two children.
